WHY THIS PROJECT?
THE YEAR THAT CHANGED (ALMOST) EVERYTHING.
December 2019: I plan with my partner to do something memorable for our lives on the occasion of our 30th birthday. A experience that would make us grow personally, while helping those who might need it.
January 2020: we decide our project. In December 2020 we would travel for a few days to the Sahara, specifically to the Tindouf refugee camps, where more than 150,000 people are still living in exile after almost 50 years of oblivion. We would help the NGO “Sahara Conmigo” there in whatever they need from us.
March 2020: A global pandemic turns the world upside down and all of our plans are ruined… in part.
This pandemic has made ALL of us recalculate our routes and rethink about many aspects of our day-to-day life.
Our December in the Sahara has faded due to this health crisis, but aid remains paramount for this people forgotten by many for 45 years and left to fend for themselves in the desert.
If confinement seemed hard to you; Imagine that you didn't have the internet to watch series, you also didn't have water when you turn on the tap (not to mention hot water), that you live in a camp in the middle of winter, that you have to rationalize your food and that social distance measurements, hand washing and wear your protective mask are science fiction when you are crowded in a refugee camp, without soap or enough sanitary supplies. All of this without the prospect of you coming home, at least in the near future.
Well, this is happening, while you are reading this, it is happening.
The world is unfair, we cannot change it, we assume it. But we also have to take our part of responsibility in making it a little better place. A little from me, a little yours, a little from your neighbor, will add a lot, and if it is not a lot, at least it will add something. We cannot always hide behind the typical "is about the politicians ..." "is about the society, other people ...". We are not to blame for the injustices of the world that we have inherited, but we do have the RESPONSIBILITY to do our job to alleviate them.
Here's a chance to do it, do you join us?
YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE WORLD, BUT YOU CAN (AND YOU SHOULD) DO YOUR PART TO IMPROVE IT.
HOW WE'LL PLAY THE 2020 CARDS...
Traveling and sporting challenges ... are two great passions that this year did not seem to have a place this year.
We are not going to travel, but we are going to contribute to improving the conditions of a lot of people thousands of kilometers away. This year there will not be great mass races, and I miss my autumn marathon, a tradition that was in its sixth year. It is the situation that we have had to live, and that something like this is considered "a problem" is just a sign of how lucky we really are for not having major concerns.
This new scenario led us to think of something different, and also, something useful for others. A personal challenge but one that we could take advantage of to collaborate with people that really need help to get by. And here, my partner Isabel was brilliant:
How could we do it all? Well, very simple. Like always, my part is just run. I'll run two challenges and you bet, for or against me. If you win the bet, you win a prize. If you lose the bet, you opt to win a prize from the drawing. In exchange for your bet, you collaborate with us on this project.
AND HERE MY CHALLENGES
October 25: Human Breaking 2
Vienna: October 12, 2019. Eliud Kipchoge became the first human to break the 2-hour barrier in a marathon. I almost cried on my couch seeing that moment. Inspired by this achievement, my first challenge will be something more within human reach, but one that I have never tried. Go for the 2 hour barrier in 30 kilometers.
November 22: 50km o'clock
November is a special month for me. Normally, a marathon month. This year we are going to try to give it one more lap, and maintain the pace that not until 42 km, but until 50. My most optimistic goal, 3:30. The reality, who knows ...
These two challenges are nothing more than the excuse to launch a solidarity project in collaboration with the NGO Sahara Conmigo, which during these convulsive weeks for the whole of society, is doing the impossible to make health and basic necessities available to the camps of refugees from Tindouf, in Western Sahara. Collaborating in the way you prefer, you will be part of this project, and (thanks to the wonderful people around us), you will also choose to win a prize. But I will explain this part to you just below:
AND HERE IS WHERE YOU TAKE ACTION
How to be part of this project?
We are not going to start with euphemisms, because the situation is alarming. It takes a step forward and collaborate.
You can do it however you want. The question is to HELP, and your help is not only a financial contribution. You can share the project on your social media and whatsapp, you can propose whatever comes to your mind, you can offer your services or products for make more attractive the prizes to draw, you can even come and pace me the morning I run, or take the water . EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU IS A GOOD IDEA compared to doing NOTHING.
EVERYTHING IS GOOD, except doing nothing.
HOW TO COLLABORATE
While you think about how you can give us a helping hand, I offer you different ways here by which you can make your contributions to make your job easier:
OPTION 1: CLICK HERE TO DONATE THROUGH OUR GOFUNDME WEBSITE.
OPTION 2: IF YOU HAVE A PAYPAL ACCOUNT YOU CAN STRAIGHTLY DONATE CLICKING HERE.
And if you still think that you can be part of some other way, I listen to you, you just have to write to me to
AND TO MAKE THIS SEEM A SPORTS CHALLENGE ... LET'S PLAY !!
If you have made your contribution to be part of this project, let's have a little fun ... and here is the good thing for you, you can even win:
Sports challenges are characterized by one thing: they can go well or they can go bad. If not, they would be called taking a walk ...
And with a project linked to two running challenges, I see myself in almost the obligation to challenge you, who are reading me right now, to launch your forecast about what is going to happen. Although it is 2020, the year of unforeseen events, a little below I leave for all who want to participate, the pool of the SAHARUNNING SERIES.
There will be a draw between the participants, and as in "The Price is Right", there will also be a direct prize to the one who stays closest but without going over the time of the 50km o'clock challenge.
It does not seem ethical to me (and it may not even be legal) to set a price per bet if this were a bet website. Even less when what it is about is an initiative so that we can all do something great, so you can bet as many times as you want (feeling on my Strava how the workouts are going), but all I ask is that be fair and honest, and participate once you have collaborated on the project. I know that if you've gotten this far and you're reading this, you're going to do. In that case, thank you, and let's play!
I give you some time to think about the challenges and what my possibilities are ... and now ... go ahead!
BEHIND THE PROJECT
If you are here, probably it is because you already know us. In that case, we hope firstly that you are not surprised to find us at the end of this website. The second is common to everybody: we await your help. We have invented the pretext, we have channeled everything, and we have made it as easy as possible for you to help. Now is the time for your action. Winter is coming...
